Audi's New RS4

Spy pictures have confirmed Audi will bring its high-performance A4 wagon, the RS4 Avant, back to the market. The RS4 was discontinued in Australia three years ago but the model is set to return in 2012 as the more practical alternative the RS5 coupe with which it will share its mechanicals. That means a high-revving 4.2-litre V8 with 331kW, produced at 8250rpm, and 430Nm – distributed to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Ignore the ‘S4’ badge on the grille. Blistered wheel-arches – sitting over large wheels with low-profile rubber – and deep mesh front air intakes are the key clues in the spy photos that this is a more potent A4 than the 245kW supercharged V6 S4.
The RS4 was previously available as a sedan, wagon or cabriolet, though European speculation suggests Audi will build only the Avant version this time.
Buyers looking for a fast four-door Audi won’t be short of choice in the future, however. The German brand is expected to reveal high-powered S versions of its new A6, the A7 Sportback and A8.
Each is rumoured to be getting a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 to sit under the bonnet. A new-generation RS6 is also anticipated, to take on the new BMW M5 being launched later this year.
